SROI Practitioner Interview

SROI Training, Paul White, evaluation

Later this week we are hosting Social Return on Invesment (SROI) training with Social Value UK. The course has proven to be very popular and there is now a waiting list in place for the next course later in the year.

Gauge NI associate Paul White completed the training last year and now carries out SROI evaluations for our clients to help them understand the outcomes and true impact of their work. We spoke to Paul to find out about his experience of the training.

What made you decide to take the SROI training course?
I knew of the work of Gauge and spoke to an existing Associate on her experiences of completing SROI evaluations. My work is normally very commercial and the potential to work with organisations producing social value was different to what I normally consulted on and I wanted to balance my normal commercial focus.
What part of the course did you enjoy the most?
Meeting people from other socially focused organisations. I am always learning and this experience opened up a new area of interest for me.
Did you find any aspects of it particularly challenging?
It takes a while to grasp the concept and measurement of social value. I needed to put it into practice during my first evaluation to get a deeper understanding of the links between outcomes and impact.
Have you completed any SROI evaluations since taking part in the training?
Yes, I have completed two and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It’s a great opportunity to measure beyond the typical criteria for projects and I have spoken to some great people who have inspired me. It is a great feeling helping others to identify the social value of their work when it might have otherwise been overlooked.
What advice would you give to the people about to begin the SROI training course this week?
Don’t expect to grasp all aspects of SROI evaluations within the 2 days. Associates learn from every project they complete so the learning process will continue well beyond the course.

Paul White now regularly carries out SROI evaluations with Gauge to help clients understand, measure and communicate their social impact. If you would like to find out more get in touch on 02890 234414 or If you are interested in social impact training opportunities check out our training options.
