Evaluating the impact of NIACRO

NIACRO (Northern Ireland Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders) is a voluntary organisation which has been working for 35 years to reduce crime and its impact on people and communities.

Gauge NI worked with NIACRO to evaluate the Social Return on Investment (SROI) of their Jobtrack service, a partnership between NIACRO, Probation Board Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Prison Service which works to increase the employability of people who have offended and people who have been in prison.

We spoke to Chief Executive Olwen Lyner about measuring their impact.

Why did you decide to measure the impact of your work?

NIACRO has always been very aware of value of the work we do, but we wanted to do something that would make our audience sit up and take notice.

There is certainly a lack of data here in Northern Ireland on the cost of crime and we were keen to demonstrate how even one individual programme can be so valuable to society and help alleviate that cost.

How did you find the process of measuring your social impact?

It went very well, it was a smooth process and Gauge kept us up to date with progress and how it was coming along on a regular basis.

How have you used your SROI report?

We had the NI Assembly Justice Committee here recently and were able to articulate it to them and show them the value for money of our work.

What has the response been from your stakeholders?

SROI makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the work NIACRO does. It has been well received so far and I know it will be incredibly useful to use in the future. When you are trying to have a conversation about the benefits of your work it is a great tool to have to hand.
